Canadian Defence and Security Network Early Career Book Workshop

Overview. The CDSN Book Workshop Program provides support for the development of scholarly monographs for early-career researchers. It provides a forum for generating constructive and informed feedback on a completed book manuscript).
Eligibility. Early career (pre-tenure) Canadian scholars[1] working on the subject of Defense and Security. When applying, applicants should consider carefully their anticipated writing schedule. The CDSN will work with the awardee to schedule their workshop. Drafts of the manuscripts will be circulated to participants four weeks before the workshop date. Dissertations that have been recently completed that are not ready for publication with an academic press will not be considered.
Workshop details. The workshop will bring together two experts whose work is relevant to the subject of the book in question along with a select group of CDSN members. The CDSN will handle all logistics related to the workshop. The location of the workshop will depend on the focus of the chosen submission with the aim of having the manuscript discussed at a CDSN research centre that has its own experts on the topic.[2]
Proposal Requirements and Selection Criteria
Proposals should focus on scholarly manuscripts being produced with the intent of securing a publishing contract with an academic press. The author and their project will be selected based on the potential significance of the finished work to the field of Defence and Security studies and the potential impact of the work on the author’s career.
Workshop proposals must include the following components:
1. A brief one-page (max) cover letter that explains the status of the manuscript (whether the work is under contract with a publisher, a list of publishers who have expressed interest, or a list of potential publishers identified by the applicant). The cover letter should also include a list of scholars (5) the applicant may wish to participate at their workshop. The applicant need not have contacted these individuals before hand.
2. A three-page (max) proposal of the project in development, a summary of the major theoretical and empirical contributions, a table of contents and an explanation of how this workshop opportunity will be important to the process of completing the work. Applicants should also include an expected timeline for the completion of the book manuscript and, if applicable, a statement specifying their tenure and/or promotion timelines.
3. A curriculum vitae.
Proposals must be submitted by 5:00 PM on April 29, 2022, EDT via email to info@cdsn-rcds.com. Attachments should be in .doc or .docx format. Please include “CDSN Book Workshop Proposal 2022” in the subject line.
