Description
Recent events have demonstrated the fragility of the critical supply chains upon which Canadians rely. Recent flooding has exposed vulnerabilities in transportation and production infrastructure, while competing states have used their control of supply chains to their own advantage during emergencies, often at the expense of Canadians (eg. personal protective equipment). This theme will explore international aspects of supply chains, specifically the sources, diversity, and substitutability of key products necessary for the safety and security of Canadians. We focus on three overlapping components that examine critical sectors, threat countries, and key events, including:
a) Review of supply chain structures for critical sectors, including those identified by the Department of National Defence’s Key Industrial Capabilities
b) Analysis of supply chain threats originating in specific countries, focusing first on China.
c) Examination of key recent events associated with supply chain interruptions.
